What are the advantages of the different set angles?

  • 45º - Great for planing softwoods and North American hardwoods such as maple and walnut and such. It can handle figured maple well, but will have problems with figured cherry and walnut. This angle is the easiest to push/pull.
  • 47° -  A good compromise between good tear-out performance and effortless use.
  • 50º -  Great for North American hardwoods with some to lots of figure. It can handle pine, if needed, and can take on straight grained tropicals, too. This plane takes more effort than the 45 but is not hard to pull/push.
  • 55º -  For highly-figured American hardwoods and figured tropicals. This plane takes more effort to push/pull than the others, but easily gives good results on figured woods.
  • 60º -  For extremely hard-to-work woods and for use as a scraper plane. It takes the most effort to use this plane.

All planes have brass set-screws to center the iron and make adjusting easy.

Japanese plane iron upgrade

Knight-toolworks and Harrolson with www.japanesetools.com have worked hard to bring the worlds first handmade Japanese iron made to fit a normal plane.

These irons are blue steel and wrought had forged together. They are ¼” thick and 2” wide and 5” long. The irons are direct replacements for my normal O-1 irons with little work to fit them.

The irons will stay sharp far longer then O-1 or A-2 give a deeper surface and plane with even less tearout. They also take less effort to use. I believe these are the best irons for a more normal type of plane. They are hand stamped with Shizu Tani (tranquil valley)

Coffin & Finish Smoothing Plane

The smoothing plane is used to put the final finish on your work.  (Less work and a far better finish than sanding.) The coffin plane is great: just get behind it and push all day! It’s good for large surfaces too. The finish plane can be held in a lot of different ways and used one-handed. It both pushes and pulls well.

Dimensions of the coffin plane are 7.5" X 3" X 2.75" with a 2" iron 5" long.  The finish plane is 7.5" X 3" X 1.75" with a 2" iron 3.5" long.   This plane has an adjustable mouth to compensate for wear.  A very tight mouth produces extremely fine shavings and little tear-out.  The plane is available with a 45º iron for normal use on most woods. A 50º iron for figured and most woods, 55º for high figured woods, or a 60º  iron for use on very figured woods is available.  With a 45º and 1/4" thick iron, this finish plane will slice curly maple with little or no tear-out.  This plane works great with small to large hands. The plane can also comes with a short iron that allows you to put your hand over it. The plane comes sanded and sealed.
